How do I check which RAM is compatible?

Match the memory type, form factor and speed your board supports, and check slot count and maximum capacity first.

Match four things: the memory generation your system supports, the physical form factor, the number of free slots, and the maximum capacity the board or laptop allows.

What to check

  • Generation. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. The notch sits in a different place, so the wrong one will not fit.
  • Form factor. Desktops use full-length DIMMs. Most laptops use shorter SO-DIMMs.
  • Slots. Open the case or check your system information tool to see how many slots exist and which are filled.
  • Maximum. Your motherboard or laptop manual lists the largest supported total.

Where to find it

The manual or support page for your exact model is the best source. A system information utility can show current memory type and speed. Many memory makers also offer compatibility lookups by model.

Speed and pairs

Faster modules usually run at the speed your system supports. For best results, install matched pairs and fill slots in the order the manual suggests.
