Can my laptop be upgraded?
Many laptops allow storage and memory upgrades, but thin models often solder memory to the board. Check before you buy parts.
Start here
Often, yes, at least the storage. But many thin laptops solder their memory directly to the board, and some use proprietary drives. Check before you spend anything.
How to find out
- Look up the service manual or support page for your exact model number.
- Search for teardown photos of the model to see what is inside.
- Check how many memory slots exist and whether any are empty.
- Note the storage type: 2.5-inch bay, M.2 slot, or soldered.
Common findings
- Fully upgradeable. Memory slots and a standard drive slot. Lucky you.
- Storage only. Memory soldered, but the SSD can be swapped.
- Partly soldered. Some memory on the board plus one free slot.
- Sealed. Nothing user-replaceable. External storage is your option.
Before opening it
Opening a laptop can affect warranty terms. Check yours. Then back up, power down, unplug and, if the manual says so, disconnect the internal battery.
